On Tuesday and Wednesday, the children got to experience some messy play by making Pumpkin Putty.
Q: What can I do to help my child’s language development?
A: Read. Read with your child. Read with your child to improve vocabulary, attention, understanding, sharing skills, grammar, sequencing skills... Research shows, and parents know, that reading with their child builds skills and confidence. Here are some tips for a successful reading time with your preschool child: Read books that your child has chosen. If he chooses books with too much print or information – feel free to shorten the sentences or use the illustrations as a focus for discussion or exploration. “I wonder what happens to this part of the rocket?” “This princess looks mad – is there a clue in this picture? Why is she mad?” Sit close together so you can both see the print and the pictures. If your child is ‘too restless’ to sit for a story – read aloud while they are eating a snack, drawing a picture or building with their blocks. Use expression in your voice. Encourage your child to try out different voices for different characters in the story. “Hmmm, a talking apple might sound like this….” Read the same book several times. Repetition helps your child to predict events and to understand the beginning, middle and end sequence of a story. Have a variety of books available – predictable books (e.g. Goodnight Moon, Sitting on the Farm), number books, abc books, action books (e.g. Nicky’s Noisy Night, The Going to Bed book), story books (e.g. Maisy Goes to the Library, Jillian Jiggs), wordless books (e.g. Rosie’s Walk),rhyming books ( e.g. Barnyard Banter, Sandra Boynton books), books about your child’s interests. Keep it short- judge the time to stop reading by your child’s interest and the ‘squirm’ factor. Make reading a fun and relaxing time for both you and your child. Have fun and keep chatting. (Mrs.) Meg I know many parents haven't had a chance to peek into our classroom since the beginning of the year, but we are very excited to have all our brand new furniture arrive. It was certainly worth the wait.
